Ideas for Teachers 1 (Theme: Friendship)

Assalamualaikum.

How are you today? Hopefully you are in a pink of health.

This entry is quite special for me because I would like to share some of my ideas in teaching English.

Well, I have a limited experience in teaching English - just around 1 ½ year of experience. I’ve worked as a trainee and temporary teacher in primary school. It was an unforgettable experience in my life where I have to handle the primary students. It’s tough and challenging though. I’m smiling now. Why? It is because I cried when I was encountered by uncontrollable kids.

Ops, I did it again (With Britney Spear's voice)
Let’s go back to our business.

Last week I taught a lesson on this theme; FRIENDSHIP. The topic was ‘What are Friends for?'. I could say it was a fruitful lesson because my students (of course girls) were crying during the lesson. I was surprised. Aha, that time I have to play my role as a counselor.

SET INDUCTION

I showed this proverb:

‘A Friend in need is a friend indeed’

Then I did a brainstorming session where I want to attract my students’ interest. I could see their eyes were blinking and rolling. So, I gave some clues to them. After finishing brainstorm for ideas, I explained to them the meaning of the proverb.

STAGE 1

The students read the friendship quotes and I asked few questions like ‘Why do you like your friend?’, ‘What makes a good friend?’, ‘Can woman and man be a friend?’ and so on. I was amazed with my students’ responses.

STAGE 2

Then, I played a video clip entitled ‘What is a Friend?’

STAGE 3

I asked my students to close their eyes and imagine about their best friend in certain situations. It took around 2 minutes for them to get into the situation.  Next, I played the song ‘Say Goodbye’ by S Club 7. The lyric was included in the video. The students were listening and tried to relate the song to their memories. After the video had finished playing, the students shared what they felt when they were listening to it.

STAGE 4

For practice activity, I asked the students to make their own poem in a group of three. I let them  read a sample before they do the activity. It’s important for them to get the idea.

The sample of the poem:

You Are..

You are the smile on my face,
You are the best of my day,
You are the good in my soul,
You are the beat of my heart,
You are the honest truth,
But most of all,
You are thing that I never want to lose.

CONCLUSION

I recapped the lesson and I let my students sing the song.

............................................................................................

It was a wonderful and joyful lesson for me as I could see my students were excited.

But I’ve to say sorry to 2S as I was not able to carry out the lesson well because of some reasons.

Note: You can use other songs instead of 'Say Goodbye'. It's up to you. You're the teacher!
